Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural management.
