Broad revealed that he still lacks an effective strategy to get out Steve Smith and suggests that the historic series could become a drawn-out contest if England fails to remove Smith early in his innings.
Smith's Dominant Record
Steve Smith, recognized as a top-tier contemporary cricketers, holds a remarkable average of over 56 in England-Australia contests with 12 tons to his name.
Smith, competing in every Ashes series since 2010-11, emerged as leading run-getter during the 2017-18 and subsequent 2019 series, accumulating substantial run tallies while Broad was still playing for England.
Broad's Frustration
"I remember clearly when he compiled that substantial innings in Perth during 2017 and every delivery seemed to hit the sweet spot for the entire match," Broad commented on a cricket podcast.
"Every delivery I tried just connected perfectly with his bat."
"He maintains that specific approach of 'this pitch suits me, and I won't be dismissed."
Record-Breaking Performance
Broad managed to dismiss the batsman on 11 occasions in international tests - three more than competing pitchers - yet admits he hasn't identified an effective strategy.
The batsman's lifetime average of 56.02 climbs to nearly 60 when on home soil. Just the iconic Ricky Ponting with 41 hundreds has registered higher figures than 36 hundred-run innings for the Australian team.
Facing the Batting Genius
The bowler explained: "Obviously Smith's approach has changed over time, but I still cannot confidently state 'this is the way to dismiss him."
"It shows a remarkable quality of his. He's exceptionally difficult to bowl against. On occasion you feel that you haven't bowled a bad delivery and it still races for a boundary."
Current Performance and Readiness
Smith's performance dipped somewhat between June 2023 and December 2024 when he went 23 innings failing to score a hundred, but he returned to form with two centuries against the Indian team recently and made 141 and 131 against the Sri Lankan team at the start of this year.
After a two-month break, he began his buildup for the upcoming series in October's final weeks and quickly registered 118 in his comeback match.
Game Plan
"For series victory, we need to limit his average to below fifty, correct?" the bowler asked.
"He's going to make a ton, it's his trademark."
"If he averages 40 runs, that amounts to at least 15 less than his usual output, so you're doing brilliantly. In my opinion it's crucial to dismiss him before he settles."
"If England fail to achieve removing him within the first forty scoring shots, it's going to be a drawn-out battle."
Adapting Approaches
The English team has attempted different approaches to combat Smith's unique technique over 14 years of Ashes contests.
The bowler mentioned developing a new outswinger specifically for Smith before the 2023 series, while English bowlers have aimed at his pads, pitched away from the third stump and experimented with the leg gully position during 2019 - matches in which the batsman commenced with twin centuries at Edgbaston.
Unforgettable Instances
"I recall when Jason Roy was fielding at that close leg-side position, and he kept diving left and right for the initial thirty balls, barely failing to catch repeatedly," Broad described.
"The batsman survived, scored two centuries in that match, unbelievable innings."
The bowler continued: "I participated in a strategy session about Steve Smith in 2017-18 and someone mentioned 'oh, you could try going for the base of the stumps early'}."
"'Oh really, let's verify how many times he's been bowled in home matches during the previous five seasons?' A single instance."
Fast Bowling Option
The next encounter, which starts in Friday in Perth (early morning GMT), seems set to include Smith facing the English fast bowler for the first test matchup since the previous encounter, when he experienced difficulties and struck by a bouncer during Archer's aggressive bowling at Lord's.
The batsman has always pointed out that the bowler didn't get him in that particular Test - he had to retire hurt and got out later lbw to Chris Woakes upon resuming his innings - though the bowler succeeded to dismiss him on a hook shot in an ODI during the previous season.
"Is Archer capable be that solution?" the bowler questioned. "Forcing an outside edge from back of a length, just chasing it."
"Because Jofra Archer possesses that angle of moving inward toward the wickets, could he produce one that moves away? Smith's anticipating the inward movement."
