Al Gore has speculated that anxiety of receiving criticism from President Trump may have led Bill Gates to row back on his climate crisis position.
Describing Trump as “the most corrupt president in American history”, Gore alerted that the president’s endorsement of oil and gas and retreat from clean power is “badly damaging” the American economic system.
Climate Damage and Economic Impact
In an conversation at the UN climate conference in Belém, Gore stated, “Trump’s already doing a lot of damage to the environment. Perhaps the largest impact he’s doing is to the United States itself.”
He pointed out that China is now exporting green technology with a cumulative export value that outstrips all oil and gas shipments from the United States, a pattern that is accelerating quite dramatically.
The Philanthropist’s Surprising Reversal
Bill Gates, formerly a leading advocate in environmental efforts, recently stated for moving the environmental emergency to a lower priority, to focus on global wellness.
Gore voiced bewilderment at this shift, saying, “The idea of slowing down on climate again puzzled environmental experts that I know and respect.”
“Yes, the president approves. It’s possible what Gates was shooting for.”
Gore noted that after the president’s return to office, Gates let go of most of his climate staffers, visited the presidential residence, and lavished praise on Trump.
Fear of Reprisal
Gore proposed that Gates, like many wealthy executives, may be concerned of being bullied by Trump. “It’s possible that he is genuinely concerned that Trump will bully him,” Gore remarked.
Trump responded to Gates’ change of heart with praiseful social media posts.
Gore continued, “The sole positive feedback of what he released last week was from the president. Yes, Trump loves it. Perhaps what he intended.”
Rejecting a False Choice
Gore emphasized that framing the climate crisis and global health crisis as competing priorities is misguided.
“The notion that there is a binary choice between health and climate has been roundly rejected by nearly all experts in this field,” he explained.
“It’s completely irrational that governments are forcing citizens to subsidise the destruction of our collective tomorrow.”
Gore highlighted that the Lancet released a report on the same day as Gates’ announcement, detailing the enormous health consequences of inaction on climate.
A Call for Redirected Funding
Rather than taking money away from environmental initiatives, Gore argued that Gates should push for redirecting the hundreds of billions spent on oil and gas support toward health and environmental innovations.
“Speeding up progress to the climate crisis is one of the single most effective ways to improve healthcare in the world,” he declared.
Supporting International Cooperation
Gore robustly defended the annual Cop meetings, explaining that they achieve significant results than they are given credit for.
“These global meetings acts as a nucleus for businesses and organizations that gather annually,” he said. “Numerous groups come up with their own agreements that advance progress.”
“The Cop process itself is one of the principal reasons that the green transition has accelerated significantly.”
He added that businesses and nations are moving forward with new technology and implementing renewable energy and other low-carbon initiatives.
Positive Progress and Generational Change
Gore celebrated what he sees as a “shift in attitudes” in the U.S., with numerous citizens turning towards environmental efforts even as the federal government undoes them.
He warned that Trump might face a “more independent” Congress following recent voting losses for Republican candidates.
“There’s a completely false view out there that somehow we are falling behind.”
Gore commended the progressive politician for his effective campaign for NYC leadership, saying that while he did not agree with some of his ideas, his political skills were remarkably evident.
Highlighting Climate Impacts
At the summit, Gore showed attendees with a visual presentation of horrors caused by the environmental emergency.
In front of a large display showing pictures of recent catastrophes exacerbated by global heating, Gore declared, “It’s completely irrational that we are letting this persist.”
He spoke passionately while showing images of extreme dry spells in the rainforest, Greenland shedding its ice, and devastating weather in Vietnam, the Caribbean, Brazil, the Pacific nation, and the United States.
“For how much longer are we going to do nothing and keep increasing temperatures so that these sort of events get more severe?” he asked.
Adaptation, Mitigation, and Realism
Gore emphasized the need to both adapt and mitigate, but cautioned that if this irrational behavior continues—treating the atmosphere as a dump—some things will be very difficult to adapt to.
Advancing Emissions Tracking
His main focus at the conference has been to advocate for the Climate Trace project, which monitors global warming pollutants and harmful substances causing health problems globally.
“We are very excited about these innovative technologies,” Gore said. “We possess the tools and the implementation strategies. A few individuals think we don’t have the government commitment, but as I like to remind people, determination is a replenishable asset.”
